What Is a Good Rank Math Score and How to Reach 80+
A good Rank Math score is 81 or higher, but 100/100 isn't required. Here's what each test checks, which ones add the most points and which suggestions you can safely ignore.
A good Rank Math score is 81 or higher, the point where the meter turns green according to Rank Math's guide to scoring 100/100. Most of those points come from a short list of checks you can pass in an afternoon.
Below, you'll see what the colours mean, which tests carry the weight and where it's fine to stop chasing points.
What is a good Rank Math score?
81 or above is a good Rank Math score, because that's where the plugin shows green. The Rank Math SEO score is out of 100 and checks the basics: how the focus keyword is used, your links and your meta tags.
Rank Math Content AI has its own score, which Rank Math keeps separate from the SEO score. The SEO score asks whether the fundamentals are in place. The Content AI score asks how well the writing covers the keyword compared with pages already ranking for it.
Green, yellow and red: what the colours mean
Green starts at 81, yellow runs from 51 to 80, and red sits below that. A post in the yellow band usually has a handful of fixable gaps rather than a deep problem.
The WordPress Basics Guide puts the target in practical terms: "A good score, even something like 80 to 90, usually means your fundamentals are solid."
Do you need 100/100?
No. Rank Math itself says so: "We've mentioned many times that you don't have to score 100% on a test to pass it."
Getting a Rank Math score of 100 does have one hard requirement, though. Per the same guide, "you have to pass all the basic SEO tests for your keywords to achieve a 100/100 score", so a missed basic test caps you below it.
The WordPress Basics Guide warns that chasing the last points has a cost: "The SEO Score is helpful, but chasing 100 can lead to over-optimization." Once you have a good Rank Math score, stop unless a remaining fix also makes the post better to read.
How to reach 80+: the Basic SEO tests
The Basic SEO tests are the cheapest points on the scorecard, because each one asks only that your Rank Math focus keyword turns up in a specific place. Fix these first and the score usually jumps by itself.
Put the focus keyword in the title, description, URL and opening
Four placements are checked, and each is a quick edit:
- The SEO title, ideally within its first 50 characters.
- The meta description, within the first 120 to 160 characters.
- The URL slug.
- The first 10% of the content. For posts under 300 words, the first 300 words are checked.
Singular and plural forms are matched, though only in English. Keep the Rank Math focus keyword exactly the same everywhere: Fei Wu found that even changing "Rank Math" to "RankMath" lowers your score.
How long should the post be?
Length is the one test where a modest post loses points, and it's graded on a sliding scale rather than pass or fail.
| Word count | Credit on the length test |
|---|---|
| Over 2,500 | 100% |
| 2,000 to 2,500 | 70% |
| 1,500 to 2,000 | 60% |
| 1,000 to 1,500 | 40% |
| 600 to 1,000 | 20% |
| Under 600 | 0% |
That's one test among many, so a 1,200-word post can still land in green. Longer posts take more work to produce, and what a blog post costs from a freelancer or an AI writer is worth knowing before you decide how long to go.
Additional SEO tests that add points
Once the basics pass, a second group of checks covers how the keyword is spread through the page and how the post connects to others. They're less about a single placement and more about proportion.
Keyword density, subheadings and image alt text
Rank Math keyword density earns full marks at 1% to 1.5%, and the test warns above 2.5%. Rank Math's other guide agrees that about 1 to 1.5% is sufficient in most cases.
Put the Rank Math focus keyword in at least one H2 or H3, and in the alt text of at least one image. Don't add it to every image or every heading; the WordPress Basics Guide advises doing so only when it fits.
Keep the full URL to 75 characters or fewer, and don't reuse the focus keyword on another post.
Internal and external links
You need at least one external link, and at least one of them must not be nofollow. Internal links are checked too, with no minimum count given.
The WordPress Basics Guide suggests 2 to 4 internal links and 1 to 2 external sources. Your own related posts are the obvious internal targets, such as our look at whether AI-written blog posts can rank on Google.
Title and readability tests

The title tests are four small checks: the keyword in the first half of the SEO title, a positive or negative sentiment word, a power word from Rank Math's list, and a number. A title such as "Good Rank Math score: Proven 2026 Guide to Reach 80+" passes all four at once.
Only use them when they're honest. The WordPress Basics Guide's advice on power words and numbers is plain: do not force them.
Readability adds three more checks. Add a table of contents with a supported plugin or Rank Math's TOC block, keep every paragraph under 120 words, and include media: one image or video passes, four earn full marks.
Can you reach 80 without Content AI?
Yes. Rank Math Content AI is optional, and the SEO score can reach green without spending any credits.
Fei Wu's walkthrough is the simplest method: work down the sidebar checklist and fix the red or yellow items one at a time. In their words, "Sometimes it just only takes adding that keyword to a few places." It's a 2022 post, so some plugin details may have changed.
Some items need more than a title tweak. An image may be missing, or the keyword may need to appear more often in the body to lift density.
The same author thinks the scoring is "a bit biased" toward the paid feature, so treat that as one person's view. Rank Math's own comparison says some SEO tests use Content AI's recommendations in place of generic benchmarks, so the two do overlap.
If you'd rather not tune posts by hand, AIBlogWrite says on its site: "We tuned the writer on real WordPress sites with Rank Math until every post scored 81 or more out of 100, and it does, consistently."
Which Rank Math suggestions can you ignore?
Any suggestion that makes the post harder to read. Rank Math tells you to "consider the recommendations as suggestions, not absolute rules".
Rank Math keyword density is the clearest example, since the WordPress Basics Guide calls it "a suggestion, not a rule" and prefers variations when the copy reads well. Rank Math Content AI's exact-match suggestions can go the same way if the sentence flows without them.
Power words and numbers fall in the same group when they'd make the headline false. The simplest filter is the one the WordPress Basics Guide gives: "Fix what helps readers, ignore what hurts readability."
So work through the basics, settle for a good Rank Math score, and publish.
Frequently asked questions
Is 100/100 on Rank Math necessary to rank?
No. Rank Math states that "Even a post with a lower score can rank well if all the other factors are optimized well." A green score shows the fundamentals are covered, nothing more.
Does a good Rank Math score guarantee rankings?
No. In Rank Math's words, "There are no guarantees in SEO." The score checks on-page basics, and how a post performs also depends on the quality of the writing, which is the question behind whether AI-written posts rank on Google.
How long does a post need to be for a good Rank Math score?
There's no minimum for green. The length test gives partial credit, from 0% under 600 words to 100% above 2,500, and the other tests can make up the difference. Fei Wu notes that in short posts the word count may stay yellow while the score is still fine.
Should I change the URL of an already published post to raise the score?
No. Fei Wu's advice is not to change the URL of a published post, and to shorten URLs only on new posts. The few points aren't worth breaking a live link.
